This quote by Oscar Wilde “Be yourself—everyone else is already taken.” recaps the true essence of authenticity. Authenticity is equivalent to true self-appreciation and self-love. Maybe it sounds a bit woo woo. But if you come to think about it, the other way around, depending on other people to love and accept you, is actually way off. You’ll have to find that love within you and give it to yourself. Accepting and loving yourself for who you are is powerful. It gives you the balance and weight to keep standing strong, being flexible, when outer circumstances hit you. When you are at the mercy of other people for your worth and value, you lose power. Craving for this is human though. Everybody has a need to belong and wants to be loved and we all fear judgement, making mistakes, looking bad, failing or disappointing others at times. Psychologist Maslow visualized the basic needs of men in a pyramid, showing five stages of needs that are to be met to get to the highest state of human kind, self-actualization, meaning you reach your highest potential and is the state of complete self-acceptance. Maslow added one more lateron, self-trensendence, being one with all.
Being authentic is a journey to yourself, to be real. Facing your deepest fears and finding your deepest truths, passions and desires and then having the courage to be vulnerable, to live and act, speak and/or express yourself (congruent to your truths) out in the open. That’s where the magic happens. You tap into authentic power and you’ll radiate power.
